Our AP Chemistry students used a chemical reaction with nitric acid to break down brass, a metal made of copper and zinc. Then, using a special tool called a colorimeter, they measured how much light passed through the resulting solution to figure out what percentage of the brass was copper!

Advanced chemistry, hands-on experiments, and just one of the real-world applications happening right here at B-UHS!

WVU Medicine St. Joseph's Hospital is gearing up for the MedEd program, in collaboration with Upshur County Schools and Education Alliance. This is a two-year program that gives students a direct path to a career as a Patient Care Tech! These students have undergone an application and interview process. They will take all of their career and tech classes their junior year, with shadowing opportunities in rotations of Patient Care Tech, Sterile Processing, and Phlebotomy. Their senior year will consist of a paid internship in one of those rotations.

The MedEd students came on site last week for a hospital tour. They also met with one of our Patient Care Techs. In addition, they met with Central Sterile and the Lab and were able to tour both departments in more detail to learn more about how those areas run!

We are excited for what is in store for these students next year!

Today, Mr. Cutright's ProStart I students at Buckhannon-Upshur High School practiced making a blonde roux to create Alfredo sauce. They learned the importance of tasting as they cook and adjusting seasonings for the best flavor before enjoying their sauce over pasta!
Next up: continuing to build their skills as they prepare soups and chowders in the second quarter!

Students in Mr. Payne's Natural Resource class at Buckhannon-Upshur High School examined soil particles as part of the soil suspension lab. Once a soil sample was mixed with water and powdered detergent, the samples were left over night to settle. The next day, students will measure the height of the layers after separation occurs. Through this, we can gain a better understanding of particle size as well as the mixture of sand, silt, and clay in the sample. This is important to agriculture and natural resources because soil textures help determine what type of crops can grow well in it and what the soil is best suited for.

🥩 The connection between our schools and community extends all the way to the lunch tray.

Through our Child Nutrition Program, Upshur County Schools recently procured 38 forty-pound cases of ground beef from Shorts Family Farm, bringing locally sourced food directly into our cafeterias. Partnerships like these support local agriculture, strengthen our local economy, and provide students with quality meals made possible by the people who call Upshur County home.

Technology doesn't replace learning. It accelerates it.

Today, BUHS students are putting powerful technology to work as they build skills that matter beyond the classroom. While many see devices as entertainment, our students are using them to create, collaborate, solve problems, and prepare for their futures.

That's the power of public education: giving every student access to the tools and opportunities needed to thrive in a modern world. 🚀💡

Professional Learning in Action: Teachers

Teaching and learning remain the heart of what we do. But to maximize learning, students must first be engaged, connected, and ready to participate.

Today, Buckhannon-Upshur High School teachers focused on strategies to increase student engagement and strengthen systems of support for students. As families and schools alike work to help young people build healthy relationships, stay connected to their communities, and engage with the world around them, educators are adapting their practices to meet students where they are while maintaining high expectations.
