An appointment to a U.S. Service Academy is a fully funded education opportunity valued from $240,000 to more than $400,000.
Last year, students attending or who have attended schools in Berkeley, Hampshire, Harrison, Jefferson, Marshall, Mason, Mercer, Monongalia, Putnam, and Randolph counties received appointments to United States Service Academies and Preparatory Schools. Most accepted their appointments and began their journeys this summer.
WV students graduated from U.S. Service Academies in 2026 and are moving forward to fantastic careers in various fields. Our WV students are more than capable of meeting the challenge of graduating from these prestigious institutions, but they must be aware of these opportunities and the application process in order to take advantage of them.
The key to a student’s success (besides academic, physical, and extracurricular achievements) is being informed about potential opportunities at these educational institutions and starting the information gathering process as early as possible. It is also important that they have an informed support system to assist them in navigating the application stage.
We are writing to request that you spread the word to students, families, educators and staff that Academy Day 2026 will be held for any and all students, parents, guardians and school officials interested in learning more about U.S. service academies (Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, Military/West Point, Naval).
We will also have representatives from local ROTC programs on hand to discuss ROTC scholarship opportunities. Mock interviews will be offered and a representative from the Dept. of Defense’s Medical Examination Review Board will join us on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
Academy Day is an opportunity for students, parents, guardians, and school officials to ask questions and obtain information regarding the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy as well as the ROTC scholarship process.
No Registration Required.
Students who want to attend a prestigious U.S. Service Academy or ROTC program are generally more successful when they begin planning courses and extracurricular activities early in their academic career. Please attend and encourage middle and high school aged students and parents to attend.

Parents: Smile WV's mobile dentist is scheduled to be at the high school on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. Consent forms were distributed to students in advisory yesterday. If you would like your child to be seen, complete that form and return it to school this week. If you do not have a consent form, please call the school nurse (304 472-3720, ext 5008) to have one sent home.

Promise Scholarship Updates for the Class of 2027
Good news for West Virginia seniors! Several Promise Scholarship requirements have been simplified for the Class of 2027. Students will no longer be required to meet a core GPA or specific core course requirement, and the ACT/SAT subscore minimum requirements have been eliminated. Students must earn a 21 ACT composite or 1080 SAT total score to meet the test score requirement. Because the ACT science section is now optional, it will not be included when calculating the ACT superscore.
Students must still meet the 3.0 overall high school GPA requirement and all other Promise eligibility requirements, including completing the Promise Scholarship application and 2027–28 FAFSA by March 1, 2027.

Please use the designated routes for picking up and dropping off your students at school. Please obey posted speed limits and watch for walking students and staff. Doors open at 7:25 am and dismissal is at 3:15 pm. For the safety of our students and staff please do not park in the parking spaces.

We would like to share a few important reminders and some new information as we prepare to welcome everyone back for the 2026–2027 school year. We are incredibly excited to welcome our students back on Thursday morning and look forward to a great year together!
Open House – Wednesday, August 19
Our Open House will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19, from 3:30–6:30 PM.
Student schedules will be available for pickup.
Schedule change request forms will be available.
No schedule changes will be made during Open House. All schedule changes must be formally requested and reviewed.
Please understand that while every request will be considered, not all schedule change requests can be approved.
Lockers will be used this school year. All large bags and backpacks must be placed in the student's assigned locker before the start of 1st period and remain in the locker until before the start of 8th period.
Students may carry:
Bags no larger than 12" x 6" x 12"
Binders
Large backpacks and bags are not permitted in classrooms.
Personal Electronic Devices
In accordance with WV Code §18-2-46, personal electronic devices are not permitted to be used or in a student's possession for use during the school day from 8:00 AM–3:15 PM, except during the designated lunch period. Students are expected to follow the school's personal electronic device procedures throughout the school day.
Lastly, please read and complete the acceptable use policy agreement. Students and guardians must sign the agreement before the school issued device will be given to the student.
We are extremely excited about the year ahead and the opportunities it will bring. Our goal is to make this the best school year yet for our students, and we are looking forward to working together with our students and families to make that happen.

We are excited to offer a new SAT Preparation course this school year! This class is available to upcoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors who would like additional support and guidance in improving their SAT scores and increasing their opportunities for college scholarships.
One of the primary goals of this course is to help students qualify for the Promise Scholarship, which provides $5,500 per year—up to $22,000 over four years—for students who meet and maintain the scholarship requirements while attending college.
The SAT Preparation course will be offered during 4th period and will focus on test-taking strategies, targeted skill development, practice assessments, and individualized support to help students reach their highest potential.
If your student is interested in enrolling in this course, please have them contact the school counselors as soon as possible by calling 304-472-3720, ext. 5018 or ext. 5005, or by sending them an email.
